Online financial services may ask for identity documents, business records, bank statements, or tax information to meet legal obligations or assess eligibility. Before sharing those records, verify who is asking, why the information is needed, and how it will be protected. A professional-looking website or social-media profile is not proof that a provider is legitimate.
Verify the provider independently
Find the company’s legal name, physical or registered address where applicable, customer support details, and regulatory status if it offers a regulated service. Use official regulator registers and contact information obtained independently. Be cautious if the company claims to be a bank but does not clearly identify the institution actually holding the funds.
Read the terms and privacy policy
Look for fees, eligibility rules, account limitations, complaint procedures, data-sharing practices, retention periods, and the process for closing an account. If the service uses a partner bank or another provider, understand the role of each party.
Warning signs
- Promises of guaranteed approval or credit regardless of circumstances.
- Pressure to pay an unexplained fee immediately.
- Requests for passwords, one-time codes, or remote access to your device.
- Instructions to falsify addresses, ownership, invoices, or transaction purposes.
- Communication that relies only on an unverified messaging account.
Share documents safely
Use the official portal or another verified secure channel. Share only what is reasonably required and ask whether unnecessary information can be redacted. Keep a record of what was sent and when. Do not alter documents in a way that misrepresents their contents.
If you suspect a scam
Stop communicating through the suspicious channel. Contact your bank or relevant provider using verified details, change compromised passwords from a trusted device, revoke suspicious sessions, and report the incident to the appropriate authority in your jurisdiction.
Legitimate services can still decline applications or request additional verification. This article is educational and does not endorse any specific provider.
